Latest research to be published shortly in the OBESITY research journal has shown for the first time ever that a natural extract from a plant, yerba mate, could have excellent effects against obesity. The research looked into a number of effects of yerba mate extracts. This plant is native to South America, but is now being fed to obese mice and showed great anti-obesity activity. Several genes found in the mice related to obesity returned back to their normal levels after the extract had been given. The extract even helped to reduce high glucose and cholesterol levels, suggesting that the yerba mate extract can act together to suppress weight gain in the body, fat accumulation, and decrease the levels of cholesterol, LDL, glucose and triglycerides. A leading researcher into obesity, professor Anthony Leeds from the University of Copenhagen, stated that this research shows clearly that the compounds of the yerba mate extract helped to reduce weight gain of the mice, who were on a high fat diet, as well as improving the blood lipid profiles. The treatment also helped to regulate a number of genes (including the 'eating hormone') and gave a number of important clues about weight loss. Yerba mate is made into a hot drink in South America, and it is also used as the principal weight loss ingredient of supplement Zotrim. In Zotrim, it is enhanced with extracts of damiana and guarana, which are also South American plants. The combination of natural ingredients taken from plants is shown to have an established effect on losing weight in humans, as shown in five independent investigations. The results showed that people taking Zotrim lost an average of 5.1kg (11.2lbs) compared with only 0.3kg (0.7lbs) with a placebo. The supplement works by helping people to feel fuller and eat less. Notes to Editors: The study took into account the effects that the yerba mate extract had on weight loss and other obesity-related problems, tested on mice on a high fat diet. Thirty mice were split into three groups, taking either a standard diet or diet high in fat. After 8 weeks, the mice on a high fat diet were randomly given a treatment, and after treatment levels of cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured. The study showed that the treated obese mice showed noticeable weight loss with yerba mate, as well as restored serum levels of cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, glucose and more.
